Throwback Thursday: NO KID HUNGRY: End Child Hunger in America – Summer is the hungriest time of the year!

When I was a child growing up - we would play outside all day and then run into the house and find something to eat. Growing up in an Italian household - there was always enough food to go around. In fact, our house was the place all the kids hung out because my Mom always had enough food for everyone. Today kids aren't as fortunate. The statistics of hungry children in the US are astounding. In fact, 1 out of 5 kids go hungry.

My friend, Billy Harris of HANGING WITH HARRIS has been involved with the NO KID HUNGRY campaign for years.

Childhood hunger is a major problem in America, but it is a solvable one. NO KID HUNGRY is building a nationwide network of problem solvers to end childhood hunger and we all should help.

Using proven, practical solutions, we are ensuring that every child gets enough healthy food every day. NO KID HUNGRY developed public-private partnerships made up of elected officials, corporate and community leaders, parents, educators, chefs, and concerned citizens to generate the will and skill to help communities feed children in need every day of the year.

When we stand together and take action to connect kids to the nutritious food they need, we're also creating a stronger, healthier, smarter America.

IN THE SUMMER,  SCHOOL MEALS DISAPPEAR AND KIDS GO HUNGRY

Many kids who rely on school meals struggle to get enough to eat during the summer months. It's time to improve the way we feed kids when school is out of session.

THE FACTS
  • The summer meals program was created in 1968 to help kids in need get healthy food when school is out.
  • The current program operates under a set of one-size-fits-all regulations that don't work in many communities.
  • Transportation challenges, inclement weather and bureaucratic hurdles means five out of six kids who may need these meals aren't getting them.
AS CONGRESS CONSIDERS THE REAUTHORIZATION OF CHILD NUTRITION PROGRAMS THIS YEAR, WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE THE SUMMER MEALS PROGRAM SO IT HELPS LOW-INCOME KIDS NO MATTER WHERE THEY LIVE.

Saturday Study: Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

Fill A Bag. Help Feed Families.

National Association of Letter Carriers:
Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

Each year Letter Carriers drop a brown paper bag with the mail at each home.
The request is to fill the bag with non-perishable items and leave it out on May 9, 2015
The letter carriers collect the bags and deliver to the local food bank.

The 23rd Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive is this Saturday, May 9

The  National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its 23rd annual food drive on Saturday, May 9. Letter carriers will collect non-perishable food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes.

It is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, and is held annually on the second Saturday in May in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam.
With the extreme weather experienced this winter by much of the country, along with the economic struggles many Americans face, the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive never has been more important.
Letter carriers are honored to be able to help people in need,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said. “We see the needs in the communities we serve, and we believe it’s important to help meet those needs.”
Hunger affects about 49 million people around the country, including millions of children and senior citizens. And one in four households with a member currently serving in the U.S. military turns to a food bank for food assistance.
Pantry shelves filled up through winter-holiday generosity often are bare by late spring. And, with most school meal programs not available during summer months, millions of children must find alternate sources of nutrition.
On Saturday, May 9, as they deliver mail, the nation’s 175,000 city letter carriers will collect donations left by residents near their mail boxes. They will be joined by retired letter carriers, by family members and friends, and by countless volunteers to help collect and distribute the sacks of non-perishable food items that get left next to generous customers’ mailboxes that morning.
People are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods such as canned soup; canned vegetables; canned meats and fish; pasta; peanut butter; rice or cereal next to their mailbox before the regular mail delivery on Saturday.
Carriers will bring the food to local food banks, pantries or shelters, including many affiliated with Feeding America, which is a national partner in the drive, as are the U.S. Postal Service, United Way Worldwide, the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, the AFL-CIO, Valpak and Valassis.
People who have questions about the drive in their area should ask their letter carrier, contact their local post office, or go to nalc.org/foodfacebook.com/StampOutHunger or twitter.com/StampOutHunger (#StampOutHunger).
