Veterans, Soldiers & Sailors Cinema Festival is sponsored by Big House Los Angeles Entertainment Festival in partnership with the National Veterans Foundation.  This one day showcase festival is one of the few film festivals to highlight filmmakers that are former military Veterans as well as active Soldiers and Sailors. VSS even welcomes foreign military and former military personnel from around the world!

Screenings are held each year on Veterans Day at LA LIVE in downtown Los Angeles. Filmmakers of all types were encouraged to submit and stories do not have to be of war or military related to qualify.

September is CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS Month because kids can't fight Cancer alone!

Families, caregivers, charities and research groups across the United States observe September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In the U.S., 15,780 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; approximately 1/4 of them will not survive the disease. A diagnosis turns the lives of the entire family upside down. The objective of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to put a spotlight on the types of cancer that largely affect children, survivorship issues, and – importantly – to help raise funds for research and family support.

• 1 in every 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer
• In the U.S., one out of every five children with cancer will not survive

Saturday Study: OPERATION BACKPACK / Give Back. Give a Pack!

Too many children are facing the new school year with no backpack, notebook, pencils — basic supplies they need for school! That makes staying on track difficult for any young student, and especially one who might already be struggling.

$81 is the average cost to buy a backpack with school supplies for a kid-in-need. Since 2001 The Volunteers of America Charity http://www.voa.org 

has distributed bags to homeless children in grades K - 12 across the country with Operation Backpack Campaign. Bags and backpacks containing up 24 items (flash drives, calculators, geometry kits, dictionaries) that can help students perform better.

Throwback Thursday: NO KID HUNGRY: End Child Hunger in America – Summer is the hungriest time of the year!

When I was a child growing up - we would play outside all day and then run into the house and find something to eat. Growing up in an Italian household - there was always enough food to go around. In fact, our house was the place all the kids hung out because my Mom always had enough food for everyone. Today kids aren't as fortunate. The statistics of hungry children in the US are astounding. In fact, 1 out of 5 kids go hungry. 

My friend, Billy Harris of HANGING WITH HARRIS has been involved with the NO KID HUNGRY campaign for years. 

Childhood hunger is a major problem in America, but it is a solvable one. NO KID HUNGRY is building a nationwide network of problem solvers to end childhood hunger and we all should help.

Many kids who rely on school meals struggle to get enough to eat during the summer months. It's time to improve the way we feed kids when school is out of session.

• The summer meals program was created in 1968 to help kids in need get healthy food when school is out.
• The current program operates under a set of one-size-fits-all regulations that don't work in many communities.
• Transportation challenges, inclement weather and bureaucratic hurdles means five out of six kids who may need these meals aren't getting them.

Women on Wednesday: American Widow Project

Every once in awhile I stumble onto a really amazing cause - 

THIS group of women is perfect for The KRUSING AMERICA Women on Wednesday: 

I'm sure you've heard it said that you should check online every now and again to see what's being put out there on the Internet about you. So I "Googled" my name and found someone with the same last name but with a very different story. 

Miranda Kruse, wife of CPO Jerald Kruse of the US Navy is also part of American Widow Project. Which as you can imagine, means her husband passed away. Having been raised in a military family, I know all too well the sacrifices soldiers and families make for their country. But when a soldier dies - we often forget what happens to that family, particularly the spouses. Those military wives that have been holding families together now have to find a way to hold themselves together. 

Which is exactly what this group does and exactly why American Widow Project is my Women on Wednesday blog post. 

Did you know, Since 2001, over 6,600 U.S. service members have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. This number does not include the thousands more who have lost their lives due to sudden illness, accident, homicide or those that have taken their own lives due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. At the same time, more than 3,600 young military widows face their worst nightmare when they receive that dreadful knock on the door by two military in uniform notifying them of their spouse’s death.

While the service member’s sacrifice is often acknowledged by society, many simply forget or fail to recognize the sacrifice of the spouse who is now left a grieving military widow. Oftentimes the invisible wounds of military widows are disregarded due to age or a simple lack of knowledge and understanding.

The American Widow Project recognizes the sacrifices made by the families of our fallen and believes that no military widow should feel alone in her grief. Every military widow deserves the opportunity and tangible tools available to help rebuild her life. Because of that, the American Widow Project provides the vital peer-to-peer, emotional, and educational support necessary to maximize success, healing and hope for a brighter future.

Friday Foodie: The Bark & Homemade Dog Treats for "Take your Dog to Work Day"

Today, June 26th is "Take Your Dog to Work Day" therefore continuing my Animal Awareness Week and  since it's also Friday Foodie – it seems appropriate to highlight a really great recipe just for dogs from The DOGGY BONE Cookbook. But first I have to explain how I came to know this info...

My wonderful neighbor Kathryn is an amazing cook and also a huge dog lover. And although she spends every weekday traveling for work – on the weekends she somehow finds several hours to work with an organization called THE BARK. Kath spends her Saturday's walking dogs that are abandoned or homeless. Which means every Friday - she can be found baking treats from: The DOGGY BONE Cookbook for those sweet souls.

This recipe is the one that Kathryn says the dogs like the most: 

PAW LICK'N CHICKEN

3 cups white flour

¾ Cup yellow cornmeal

1 cup chicken broth

4 tablespoons softened margarine

1 egg 

1 tablespoon milk

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine flour, cornmeal, chicken broth and margarine. Knead dough for 3 minutes. Apply a light layer of flour to rolling surface and pin. Roll dough to ¼ inch thickness and stamp out with cookie cutter. Beat egg and milk together and apply to top of biscuits with brush.

Bake at 325 degrees for 35 minutes on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Makes 2 dozen.

I've decide to focus on Pet things this month and since earlier this year (May 3-9, 2015) was the 100th Anniversary of Be Kind to Animals Week® – I decide to highlight it in my Throwback Thursday blog post. After all every day / every week is Be Kind to Animals!

The oldest commemorative week in U.S. history – one that taught generations of Americans the value of treating our animal friends with kindness and compassion, is turning 100 this May and is now looking to change the world for millions of animals still in need.

American Humane Association’s “Be Kind to Animals Week®” (May 3-9) is the longest-running, most successful humane education campaign in America, and has been supported by several U.S. Presidents, movie stars from Shirley Temple to John Wayne, Eleanor Roosevelt to Betty White, and even Dennis the Menace and Porky Pig. Look here for stunning facts, amazing photos, and an unparalleled list of VIP supporters who have been part of this iconic and historic part of our national culture and efforts to build a more humane world during the last century. A New Campaign to Recruit All Americans to the Cause of Animals.

While ministering to the homeless on the streets of Omaha, Nebraska, Father Edward Joseph Flanagan developed a lifelong interest in young people and their struggle to grow into responsible, productive members of society. Today, with your help, we continue Father Flanagan's mission of saving children and healing families.

Boys Town is also home to parenting and child behavior experts who have developed a wealth of original content over the years that is available for free in our For Parents section. I got involved with MISSION SAVE HER when I met a compassionate plastic surgeon donating his time to go to India to help reconstruct the faces of many young girls who have been disfigured after being human trafficked and gang raped. I'm been working with them to create a documentary to bring awareness to this worthy cause.
