Friday Foodie: The Bark & Homemade Dog Treats for "Take your Dog to Work Day"

Today, June 26th is "Take Your Dog to Work Day" therefore continuing my Animal Awareness Week and  since it's also Friday Foodie – it seems appropriate to highlight a really great recipe just for dogs from The DOGGY BONE Cookbook. But first I have to explain how I came to know this info...

My wonderful neighbor Kathryn is an amazing cook and also a huge dog lover. And although she spends every weekday traveling for work – on the weekends she somehow finds several hours to work with an organization called THE BARK. Kath spends her Saturday's walking dogs that are abandoned or homeless. Which means every Friday - she can be found baking treats from: The DOGGY BONE Cookbook for those sweet souls.

Before I get to the Cookbook, you have to hear what The Real Bark is doing….
http://www.therealbark.org

WE ARE RESCUERS, REHABILITATORS, STORY-TELLERS, AND FAMILY-GROWERS.

http://www.therealbark.org
We pride ourselves in taking discarded Lives into our own – Healing them – and righting the wrongs heaped upon those innocents.

We are Humans. We are flawed. And that is why we rely on each other. We are at our Finest as a Collective…and that is the place we serve THEM best. We know that THEY need Our Help – Just like we need YOUR Help. That is why we are Community Faced. To Educate, Negotiate, Support, Empower, and Enable individuals to Help their own…and then Assist Others.

THAT is the way we GROW. THAT is the way we Save MORE Lives. We will not adopt our way out of pet overpopulation in L.A. This NOT a shell game, nor a shuffle. We must go Wider. Deeper.
WE ARE A RESPONSIBLE. ETHICAL. ANIMAL. LEAGUE.
WE ARE THE REAL. THEY ARE THE BARK.

Bake your own safe, fun, and natural dog treats. The DOGGY BONE Cookbook's pet-tested, veterinarian-approved recipes are made with healthy, traditional kitchen ingredients that please even the most finicky canine connoisseurs. Included are recipes focusing on favorite flavors such as Thyme for a Treat, Howl About a Mint, and Tomutto and Cheese, holiday treats like Easter B’egg, Yappy Birthday and other special occasion dishes, and recipes for dogs with special dietary needs. Helpful hints transform even the worst cook into a full-fledged Doggy Bone Chef, while a bone-shaped cookie cutter ensures perfectly shaped biscuits every time. Funny, colorful illustrations on each page make the book as much fun to read as it is to cook with.

The book can be found on Amazon.com and other websites.
Read more at Good Reads.  http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1096593.The_Doggy_Bone_Cookbook

This recipe is the one that Kathryn says the dogs like the most:

PAW LICK'N CHICKEN
3 cups white flour
¾ Cup yellow cornmeal
1 cup chicken broth
4 tablespoons softened margarine
1 egg
1 tablespoon milk

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine flour, cornmeal, chicken broth and margarine. Knead dough for 3 minutes. Apply a light layer of flour to rolling surface and pin. Roll dough to ¼ inch thickness and stamp out with cookie cutter. Beat egg and milk together and apply to top of biscuits with brush.

Bake at 325 degrees for 35 minutes on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Makes 2 dozen.

Throwback Thursday: 100th Anniversary of "Be Kind to Animals Week"

I've decide to focus on Pet things this month and since earlier this year (May 3-9, 2015) was the 100th Anniversary of Be Kind to Animals Week® – I decide to highlight it in my Throwback Thursday blog post. After all every day / every week is Be Kind to Animals!

The oldest commemorative week in U.S. history – one that taught generations of Americans the value of treating our animal friends with kindness and compassion, is turning 100 this May and is now looking to change the world for millions of animals still in need.

600x350-K100American Humane Association’s “Be Kind to Animals Week®” (May 3-9) is the longest-running, most successful humane education campaign in America, and has been supported by several U.S. Presidents, movie stars from Shirley Temple to John Wayne, Eleanor Roosevelt to Betty White, and even Dennis the Menace and Porky Pig. Look here for stunning facts, amazing photos, and an unparalleled list of VIP supporters who have been part of this iconic and historic part of our national culture and efforts to build a more humane world during the last century. A New Campaign to Recruit All Americans to the Cause of Animals.

Unlike most 100-year-olds, this historic, 100-year-old campaign shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, for this Centennial, it is ramping up efforts, launching an ambitious year-long campaign called “Kindness 100” to recruit all Americans to become animal advocates and help solve the remaining challenges still facing millions of animals in need. The campaign, which kicks off the first week of May, seeks to enlist a new generation to do four simple things that can make a world of difference to billions of farm animals, millions of animals abandoned to U.S. shelters each year, animals in entertainment, and disappearing and endangered species.  Kindness100.org – Where you can find “how to be kind”

To reach children and adults nationwide, American Humane Association is embarking on a year-long campaign starting with a national media tour, educational roadshow to schools with a traveling museum aboard its fleet of famed Red Star Rescue trucks that save animals in disasters, and a website www.Kindness100.org where readers can find a fascinating historical retrospective of “Be Kind to Animals Week,” a series of pre-K-5 curricula to teach children compassion in all areas of life, official downloadable proclamations for local, state and federal officials, and a Kindness 100 Pledge with four things people can do to improve the lives of millions – actually, billions – of animals. 1,000,000 Challenged to Take the Kindness 100 Pledge.

American Humane Association is challenging 1 million people to take the Kindness 100 Pledge online atwww.Kindness100.org. And in recognition of this advocacy, each person who pledges will become an honorary chair of Kindness 100, joining the long list of luminaries who have served in this position over the past century.

“The need has never been greater and the time has never been better to start a new Compassion Movement,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane Association. “To help all of the creatures of the world, big and small, we encourage every American to celebrate ‘Be Kind to Animals Week’ – not only for a week, but all year round. By teaching our children the value of kindness and doing a few simple things, we may together build a better world for our animals….and ourselves.”

Wednesday Women: Becky Haisma: Paws-ing to help

June is Adopt-a-Cat Month - so I have to share a wonderful friend that has been truly a God-send to me over the years.

My friend Becky Haisma and I have been friends for over 25 years. We met in Chicago and although over the years I moved back to NYC and Becky to Dallas – today life has brought us full circle and now Becky and I both live in Los Angeles.

My Rikki
Last year when my cat of 14 years got sick - Becky was with me through it all. She was the only person I wanted with me. She even insisted that I stay at her home for a few days after Rikki died. Even though she was actually away most of the time, she knew I needed the unconditional love only an animal can give; Animals know when you're sad and her 2 dogs (Harry & Bear) and cat (Monkey) - never left my side that whole weekend.

To have a friend that not only gets who you are and what you need, especially when you can't…That is a friend to cherish forever.

BUT the real story isn't about what she did for me; in honor of Adopt-a-Cat month I have to tell you what Becky does for animals. Beside being vegan, she has always helped animals. Most people say they are going to do something but Becky actually does it.

Harry, Becky & Bear
What make her perfect for my amazing Wednesday Women is what she created in the Dallas City Shelter with Paws in the City.

Did you know: Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. And each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats).

My friend Becky Haisma - has saved and rescued countless animals over the years . She is a remarkable person – the world is a better place because of her endless love and tireless work ethic.

It stated in June 2005, when Paws in the City rescued dogs and cats from the City of Dallas shelter who were being euthanized at a rate of almost 30,000 a year. They made arrangements for the City shelter to bring animals for adoption to events in September 2005.

Their mission was sidetracked by a much bigger crisis - Hurricane Katrina. They helped evacuate 22 dogs and 40 cats from a no-kill shelter in New Orleans. In fact, Becky went to Louisiana to work at an intake station as animals came in from flooded areas. A special puppy stole her heart, but when it arrived in Dallas, it had become ill with lead poisoning from swallowing gasoline in the waters. They scrambled to raise funds for the medical bills and were able to save a young life.

They even arranged for a private plane pilot to fly to Mississippi to rescue 10 dogs from a shelter that was overloaded due to the storm. Within weeks, they had almost 35 dogs and 12 cats.

That first month incubated what would become the Paws philosophy:
We are willing to share our resources with like minded groups.
We stand ready to assist in a crisis.
We will not abandon animals that need help the most.
We work harder for hard-to-place pets
and we find ways to raise additional money when necessary
to help animals that have no where else to turn.

Paws in the City is a 501C3 all volunteer, no-kill organization and now one of the largest and most respected animal rescue groups. Although Becky now lives in LA, she continues to help animals in Los Angeles, Dallas and anywhere they need her.

Paws for a few Accomplishments:
  • Reducing the number of animals killed at the City of Dallas Animal Shelter by having them attend our off-site adoption events AND pulling animals on death row. Besides the SPCA, Paws in the City saves more dogs and cats from the City of Dallas shelter than any other organization.
  • Increasing the number of animals adopted each and every year.
  • Having the unique fundraisers such as the annual gala,Top Hat & Tails, which has sold out every year.
  • Taking in dogs and cats that other organizations overlook due to illness, age or breed. For example, heart-worm positive dogs who might otherwise have been killed at the city shelter or taking in older dogs or cats or mixed breeds of all sizes. The City shelter counts on them as a last resort.
  • Creating a training program for our dogs so that no dog is in our program due to behavioral issues for very long. They are are committed to their emotional and mental well being as well as their physical needs. They have rehabilitated many dogs who developed issues due to human neglect and abuse, giving them a second chance.
  • The organization now has over 150 active volunteers.

Saturday Study & Learn: The Meaning Behind Father's Day

Tomorrow is Father's Day 2015

What Is The Meaning Behind Father's Day?
7 Surprising Things to know about the history of this holiday

Father's Day, created to honor fathers the way Mother's Day honors mothers, is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in the United States and many other countries.

Here are 7 surprising facts about Father's Day:

1. Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash. is given credit for establishing Father's Day in 1909 after listening to a Mother's Day Sermon. Dodd wanted to honor her widowed Civil War veteran father, William Smart, and picked June 17, 1910 in honor of her father's birthday.

Me & My Dad
2. The commercial success of Anna Jarvis' Mother's Day helped turn Father's Day into an official holiday -- President Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation in 1966 issuing the third Sunday in June as Father's Day and President Richard Nixon signed it into law.

3. Father's Day falls on the third Sunday of June every year.

4. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of 2008, there are an estimated 70.1 million fathers. Globally speaking, there are 1.5 billion fathers worldwide and each year, 122 million children are born worldwide.

Theodore Krus & Linda Kruse

5. Americans spend over $1 billion annually on Father’s Day presents. And while ties and flowers are popular gifts, the one item people buy the most of each Father's Day are cards. In fact, Hallmark claims that the fourth biggest card giving occasion in the world is Father's Day, with 87 million cards exchanged each year.

6. The official flower of Father's Day is the rose. Which color of rose you pick is symbolic -- red roses are for living fathers and white roses are for the deceased.

7. One of the most famous quotes about fathers comes from author Mark Twain, who said:

“When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant
I could hardly stand to have the old man around.
But when I got to be twenty-one,
I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.”
– Mark Twain

Throwback Thursday: Honoring Carolyne Barry - Wonderful Commercial Coach & Sweet Friend

My long-time manager once said, "As we get older…the clock ticks louder…"
Lately, I am reminded how short this life is…
Yesterday was one of those days...
Singles Night many years ago

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with CAROLYNE BARRY almost 20 years ago. When I first moved to LA - Carolyne was my commercial acting teacher, a casting director, a role model and soon became a very good friend. But over the past 10 years - I have been busy. We all get busy. And just now reading about how her Commercial Workshops have flourished - I can assume, she was busy too – so we sort of lost touch.

Because of Facebook though - I would see and hear news of things happening… so it felt like were still in touch….when in fact, we really weren't. Almost 10 years ago we had a girls group that would meet once or twice a month to talk about life, work, relationships, and getting older…We would share lunch or dinner and we would support each other.

We once came up with a "singles night" where we invited our single friends and challenged them to bring one other single friend…it was a ridiciously fun night. We didn't meet anyone special but that night was special because of the special bond with my girlfriends. This picture was a collection of the hostesses who organized the party. Carolyne Barry was our ring leader. In fact, THAT picture - still sits on the shelf next to my desk. We were a collection of unstoppable women. Only lately I am realizing, I was / we were so "unstoppable" that I had not stopped since and now my sweet friend is gone.

That picture reminds me of all that we had in front of us. And with good friends to see you thru anything – life was full of promise. The clock is ticking louder and I fear, there will be more days behind than in front…so we have to do more than just watch from a distance on Facebook.

Yesterday, the incomparable Carolyne Barry lost her battle to cancer. I hope you know how MANY lives you've touched while you were here. Hopefully you can see your Facebook page - there are SO SO many people missing you. I know the world is different without you. And as I know you - I can only assume you are still coaching from the heavens above…Rest in Peace, my sweet, sweet friend.

Carolyne retweeted this recently:

"I try to avoid looking forward or backward, and try to keep looking upward."

- Charlotte Brontë

Carolyne Barry

With heartfelt sadness we want to share with all of Carolyne's many friends the passing of this amazing, phenomenal, mentor and world class teacher - Carolyne Barry. She influenced and inspired the lives of thousands. Her grand heart and spunky spirit were the trademarks of a soul that desired to drive, enhance and uplift the lives of all who came into her realm.

She will be missed but her legacy will carry on as Carolyne Barry Creative and the Carolyne Barry Technique will continue in the capable hands of Kimberly Jurgen, who worked side by side with Carolyne tirelessly. All coaches, teachers and classes are continuing according to Carolyne's specific wishes.

Students, friends, family, dogs and posse felt her tremendous wit and passion for her work, life and love. She embraced life, lived it to the fullest and engaged all of us to live with great unapologetic abandon! The Legendary Carolyne Barry will be remembered for her vibrant talent and great love. TIFFANY SHLAIN is the perfect choice for my Women on Wednesday blog post. Read on….

Last week at the SF WebFest I had the pleasure to introduce and host the Q&A with the Festival Centerpiece: Tiffany Shlain. Tiffany was the ideal choice to be the Centerpiece of the Festival and someone I was really looking forward to meeting and interviewing. She has done so much and is really making a huge difference in the world. A wonderful role model and an ideal person to highlight on my blog.

She is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker and founder of The Webby Awards. She led the San Francisco-based 501c3 team of "Let it Ripple". Travel Tuesday: KRUSING AMERICA wins another TELLY for Best Travel Pilot

Look what came in the mail yesterday!

Last year KRUSING AMERICA won 2 TELLY AWARDS for BEST EPISODE (#4 Washington) and a PEOPLE'S TELLY – which was a huge accomplishment since people I didn't know voted for the series.

So I decided to submit the Pilot Episode in this years competition and it WON! BEST PILOT.

I am honored and blessed that my little show is doing so well.

My 2015 TELLY now joins the other gals on my desk…awaiting the arrival of 3 other statues that should be here any day.

A HUGE THANK YOU to EVERYONE that put in time to make it an multi-award winning series.
