Friday Foodie: The Bark & Homemade Dog Treats for "Take your Dog to Work Day"

Today, June 26th is "Take Your Dog to Work Day" therefore continuing my Animal Awareness Week and  since it's also Friday Foodie – it seems appropriate to highlight a really great recipe just for dogs from The DOGGY BONE Cookbook. But first I have to explain how I came to know this info...

My wonderful neighbor Kathryn is an amazing cook and also a huge dog lover. And although she spends every weekday traveling for work – on the weekends she somehow finds several hours to work with an organization called THE BARK. Kath spends her Saturday's walking dogs that are abandoned or homeless. Which means every Friday - she can be found baking treats from: The DOGGY BONE Cookbook for those sweet souls.

Before I get to the Cookbook, you have to hear what The Real Bark is doing….

WE ARE RESCUERS, REHABILITATORS, STORY-TELLERS, AND FAMILY-GROWERS.

We pride ourselves in taking discarded Lives into our own – Healing them – and righting the wrongs heaped upon those innocents.

We are Humans. We are flawed. And that is why we rely on each other. We are at our Finest as a Collective…and that is the place we serve THEM best. We know that THEY need Our Help – Just like we need YOUR Help. That is why we are Community Faced. To Educate, Negotiate, Support, Empower, and Enable individuals to Help their own…and then Assist Others.

THAT is the way we GROW. THAT is the way we Save MORE Lives. We will not adopt our way out of pet overpopulation in L.A. This NOT a shell game, nor a shuffle. We must go Wider. Deeper.
WE ARE A RESPONSIBLE. ETHICAL. ANIMAL. LEAGUE.
WE ARE THE REAL. THEY ARE THE BARK.

Bake your own safe, fun, and natural dog treats. The DOGGY BONE Cookbook's pet-tested, veterinarian-approved recipes are made with healthy, traditional kitchen ingredients that please even the most finicky canine connoisseurs. Included are recipes focusing on favorite flavors such as Thyme for a Treat, Howl About a Mint, and Tomutto and Cheese, holiday treats like Easter B’egg, Yappy Birthday and other special occasion dishes, and recipes for dogs with special dietary needs. Helpful hints transform even the worst cook into a full-fledged Doggy Bone Chef, while a bone-shaped cookie cutter ensures perfectly shaped biscuits every time. Funny, colorful illustrations on each page make the book as much fun to read as it is to cook with.

The book can be found on Amazon.com and other websites.

This recipe is the one that Kathryn says the dogs like the most:

PAW LICK'N CHICKEN
3 cups white flour
¾ Cup yellow cornmeal
1 cup chicken broth
4 tablespoons softened margarine
1 egg
1 tablespoon milk

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine flour, cornmeal, chicken broth and margarine. Knead dough for 3 minutes. Apply a light layer of flour to rolling surface and pin. Roll dough to ¼ inch thickness and stamp out with cookie cutter. Beat egg and milk together and apply to top of biscuits with brush.

Bake at 325 degrees for 35 minutes on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Makes 2 dozen.
