Throwback Thursday: Jim Whittaker – First American to Summit Mt. Everest and one of my favorite interviews

While I was filming the Washington episode of KRUSING AMERICA I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing one of the most remarkable people on my Krusing journey and still one of my favorite interviews.  I wanted to highlight the 1963 iconic image for Throwback Thursday. A remarkable man, mountaineer and today still an advisor on climbing especially during this difficult week in Nepal and on Everest

Jim Whittaker: First American to Summit Mt. Everest in 1963

From CNN:

Jim Whittaker, the first American to reach the summit of Mount Everest back in 1963, is still a mentor to experienced climbers trying to follow in his footsteps.
The 86-year-old confirmed that climbers he knows to currently be on Everest are safe.

But some are trapped above the icefall, "which is very dangerous anyway," Whittaker told CNN. Since the avalanches, "the whole route would be different now than before the quake. They'll have to put a new route in from base camp up through that icefall ... They (the climbers) will have to cool it for a couple days, way until the route is reestablished ... they've got enough food and fuel for the stoves."

His son, Leif Whittaker, told CNN that he hasn't heard from everyone he knows to be on Everest.

"It's really tragic and I'm really saddened by the news," he said. "I have a lot friends in the area and friends on Everest right now. It's hard to get news from base camp and the mountains because communication is difficult as it is. Many of my friends are safe, but I'm not sure if all of them are.

"It's been a bad few years on Everest," he said. "My heart goes out to them, and I'm sending them my love and strength."

Wednesday Women of the World: Ros Thackurdeen from ClearCause / Protect Students Abroad / 3 year anniversary of Ravi Thackurdeen's preventable death

This is EXACTLY why I became a filmmaker and started this blog: to raise awareness and help people like Ros Thackurdeen  - the mother of Ravi Thackurdeen who died a preventable death 3 years ago today while on a Duke University Organized trip in Costa Rica. Ravi is one of so many kids who have died on Study Abroad Programs in the US. ClearCause was created because of these unnecessary and preventable tragedies.

Ravi Thackurdeen: June 8, 1992 - April 29, 2012
Parents should NOT be afraid to teach their children to experience life.

Parents should NOT be worried to send their children into the world.

And

Parents should NOT outlive their children….

CLEARCAUSE

We're here because they aren't

Three Year Anniversary of Ravi Thackurdeen's preventable death while on a Duke University Organization for Tropical Studies trip in Playa Tortuga, Costa Rica

Student travel is big business over $170+ Billion and over half a million American students travel outside the US each year. These are among our best and brightest, our future leaders and entrepreneurs.

Currently, the multi-billion dollar, study abroad industry is self-regulated. There are no federal or international laws protecting our students outside the U.S. and no jurisdiction when their feet touch foreign soil. Programs and universities hosting youth abroad are not even required to report such things as theft, robbery, injury, sexual assault, or death. Students are sent to foreign countries with vague awareness of the dangers they could encounter, little preparedness on how to assess and manage risks, and even less knowledge of what to do if/when they find themselves in harms way.

ClearCause Foundation, established in 2010 in honor of Tyler Hill, and every young American who died full of their future on a program that should have been the opportunity of a lifetime. Tyler was barely sixteen when he died in Japan during an Ambassador Group program called People to People Student Ambassadors. His death was 100% preventable.

Tyler Hill: 1991-2007 (16 years old)
Tyler's parents, Sheryl and Allen Hill started the foundation and published TylerHill.org to inform and engage others in an effort to establish Traveling Youth & Students Standards of Safety (TYS SOS) – because no state or federal oversight, minimum standards, or transparent public reporting exists. Student travel is big business - $170+ Billion according to WYSTC, 2013.

The Hills did not expect to hear from so many others whose child was scammed, molested, raped, abused, malnourished, killed and more abroad. American youth have been placed with unsafe chaperones, in unsafe housing, in unsafe areas, in unsafe vehicles with unsafe drivers. There is no jurisdiction when feet leave foreign soil. Hundreds have perished. Most deaths are preventable.

ClearCause strives to advance safe global youth travel. Our traveling future leaders deserve emergency preparedness planning, region risk assessment, study abroad safety training, and laws to better protect them overseas. Through the implementation of our Global Safety Education Program, our goal is for every youth and student going abroad to have safe, rewarding experiences they can bring home to share with their local communities.

Saturday Study: Green Farming from Benziger Family Winery in Sonoma, CA

Benziger Family Winery Sonoma, CA
We featured several wineries while we were "krusing" through Sonoma, CA filming our family-travel series. There were so many wonderful people and great wineries we visited that week but in this "Saturday Study & Learn" blog post - the one that stood out on our visit was the Benziger Family Winery because of their amazing hospitality, the family dynamic of having relocated to Sonoma (much like the Krus Family) and their 'Green Farming'.  This blog is designed to highlight good people doing good things in the world and the Benziger family certainly fits in perfectly.

Watch the latest KRUSING AMERICA California episode and visit with the Benziger Family and learn more about biodynamic / green farming.

BIODYNAMIC FARMING by the Benziger Family Winery

Benziger Family Winery Sonoma, CA
At the Benziger Family Winery we like to think our wines have character and conscience. This means that they’re not only great in the glass, they’re grown in a way that’s good for the environment, too.

Every wine in our portfolio carries a third-party certification of green farming practices. Whether the vineyard is certified sustainable, organic or Biodynamic, it’s carefully tended with the most eco-responsible methods available.

We don’t just farm this way because we think caring for the land is the right thing to do, it also happens to be the best way to make distinctive, authentic wines. By treating our vineyards the best way we know how, we’re making wines we’re really proud of. And that is good for, well, everybody.

Here, explore the differences between sustainable, organic and Biodynamic growing practices. Click the link below to learn more about Biodynamic farming on our Estate properties.

Throwback Thursday: Priceless footage from historic Sonoma Vineyard

Four generations of wine making with The Sebastiani Winery in KRUSING AMERICA

During our time in Northern California, KRUSING AMERICA featured several family wineries around the Sonoma Valley. The one winery that really stood out for our history segment was the Sebastiani Family Winery. With the help of the Sebastiani family we were able to uncover hours of old black and white footage that we used in our California episode to create a priceless segment for a lovely family legacy.

Today, Don Sebastiani continues family wine making into it's fourth generation

Wednesday Women of the World: Suzanne Brangham

Wednesday Women of the World:

Suzanne Brangham

Suzanne was one of the most gracious people we met in Sonoma while shooting our California episode of KRUSING AMERICA. We featured Suzanne Brangham's culinary school, Ramekins and her MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa in episode 4. I adored this town and people so much I went back several times and eventually filmed a special piece just to highlight her extraordinary hotel.

Suzanne is known as a volunteer extraordinaire, entrepreneur, artist, hotel owner of and developer, whose fingerprints can be found on many – if not most – of the nonprofit and community causes and events in the Sonoma Valley and certainly worthy of our Wednesday Women of the World in this Krusing America Blog.

SANDS CORPORATION ECO360

Our responsibility to the planet is as important to us as our commitment to the comfort and well-being of our guests and Team Members. The Sands ECO360° Global Sustainability strategy is designed to help minimize our environmental impact, and it reflects our vision to lead the way in sustainable building development and resort operations. Our legacy must be to leave a responsible, cleaner, and safer world for future generations. At Las Vegas Sands Corp., this is far more than just an idea.

PRESS RELEASES
Las Vegas Sands’ Energy Conservation Program Saved Nearly 50 million kWh in 2013
14-Aug-2014LAS VEGAS – August 14, 2014 – Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE: LVS), the world's premier developer and operator of integrated resort destinations, continues to drive leadership in corporate environmental stewardship today by sharing that it reduced its energy consumption worldwide in 2013 by 47.3 million kWh through the completion of more than 80 energy efficiency projects, reducing energy use at existing operations by 6.9 percent and 5.1 percent in newly opened properties.

The company today released its most recent environmental report, Behind the Scenes: 2013 Sands ECO360⁰ Report1, a comprehensive study of the Las Vegas Sands' green building approach, environmentally responsible operations, sustainable meetings program and stakeholder engagement initiatives.

Beyond its accomplishment in energy conservation, some of the company's other key sustainability achievements in 2013 include:
In Las Vegas, LVS has achieved an average recycling rate of 57 percent.

Marina Bay Sands, LVS' property in Singapore, reduced its emissions by 10 percent, the largest reduction of all LVS properties.

LVS' properties in Macao conserve nearly 30 million gallons of water annually due to the installation of faucet aerators.

The Sands Bethlehem team donated more than five tons of clothing and coats to charities, preventing this waste from going to landfill.

LVS achieved eight new environmental awards and certifications; now almost all of LVS' properties around the world hold at least one third-party sustainability certification.LVS also further deepened its commitment to green building in 2013, launching its Global Sustainable Development Standards, which provide sustainable owner project requirements for the development of new resorts and the renovation of existing properties. The standards are based on Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) principles, including energy and water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, sustainable materials and waste recycling. The Standards also incorporate the company's global best practices such as comprehensive lighting standards, advanced loading dock environmental provisions, as well as recycling guidelines.

"The Sands ECO360° Global Sustainability strategy reflects our vision to lead the way in sustainable building development and resort operations," said Katarina Tesarova, vice president of global sustainability at LVS. "The accomplishments LVS achieved in 2013 illustrate successes in our primary focus areas, green building and energy conservation, along with other areas, such as waste diversion, team member engagement, and building impactful partnerships. We've also more closely aligned practices at all of our properties globally to build a standard of excellence in sustainability around the world."

Through Sands ECO360 °, LVS has set the standard for environmental conservation in the hospitality and gaming industries, earning a wide range of recognitions and certifications for "green" building, operations and reporting. In 2013, the Sands Expo and Congress Center at The Venetian | The Palazzo in Las Vegas was the first meeting venue in the world to achieve APEX/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Meeting Level Two certification from the Convention Industry Council and ASTM International for its leading green meeting practices. Marina Bay Sands, LVS' property in Singapore was the first meeting venue outside of the United States to be certified at Level One. LVS also earned recognition in 2013 from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the world's only global environmental disclosure system, by securing a position on the CDP's Global 500 Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) for the company's measurement of greenhouse gas emissions and the transparency of its climate change strategy. The Sands ECO360° program has been fully integrated into LVS' operations and remains focused on meeting environmental objectives in four fundamental areas: green buildings, environmentally responsible operations, sustainable meetings, and stakeholder engagement.

Friday Foodie: Off the Eatin' Path in Vegas

Off the Eatin' Path

The best places to eat are usually the little hole-in-the-walls…and one of my new favorites is "Lotus of Siam" way off the strip in Las Vegas. I was doing interviews and reporting at the National Broadcasters Show in Vegas this week and my client suggested we go to "Lotus".  It tastes even better than it looks! This Thai place is definately a must if you're Krusing through Las Vegas.

Family recipes and a vast wine list from this owner-operated Thai eatery in a strip-mall!

Saturday Study & Learn: Kids Against Hunger

One of the original camera men from KRUSING AMERICA is doing wonderful things in the world. His production value and heart - is second to none.

Take a look at Frank Lozano's latest project: KIDS AGAINST HUNGER
Amazing work both as a humanitarian and a filmmaker!

Houston's Kids Against Hunger draws on the combined strengths of over 100 satellites across the US and Canada. They raise awareness about hunger and work to eradicate it. Houston's Kids Against Hunger is a project of Houston-based charity Global Aid Partnership. Since 2008, Houston's Kids Against Hunger has packaged and shipped over 500,000 meals across the world and in the United States. Their latest project is to feed the orphans at Victory Christian Children's Home in Malawi.

My sincere thanks goes to Westmedia, Perth for the kind donation of their beautiful footage captured in Malawi. http://www.westmedia.com.au

Saturday Study: Learning from My Mom

Each Saturday I try share something I learned along the way. Today I realized: who better to learn from than my sweet, awesome, little Italian Mom. I'm visiting with my parents this week and no matter how old I get – a day with my Mom is always a learning experience.

I include recipes and videos each week on my Friday Foodie blog day but since so much of my cooking is inspired by my little Momma, I had to share a few today. As you will see below, my Mom has the most amazing garden and uses as much as she can each day for her everyday recipes.

Enjoy!

Good Friday Foodie: Good Fish & Chips from the Knights of Columbus

Good Friday is a good time for good Fish & Chips from The Knights of Columbus

My Dad has been in the Knights of Columbus for several years now. Many of the guys in his chapter are from retired Military and Veterans - like my father. One of his favorite things to do besides golfing - is working the Friday Fish Fry.

If you haven't gone to one of their Fish Fry's - you definitely need to go! Find a local Knights of Columbus hall and visit. Nothing fancy just good food, good people on Good Friday or any Friday.

The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization. Founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in New HavenConnecticut, in 1882, it was named in honor of the mariner Christopher Columbus. Originally serving as a mutual benefit society to low-income immigrant Catholics, it developed into a fraternal benefit society dedicated to providing charitable services, promoting Catholic education and actively defending Roman Catholicism in various nations. There are more than 1.85 million members in nearly 15,000 councils, with nearly 200 councils on college campuses. Membership is limited to "practical"Catholic men aged 18 or older. Membership consists of four different degrees, each exemplifying a different principle of the Order. The Order is a member of the International Alliance of Catholic Knights.

Throwback Thursday: A book cover from the past - 20+ years later - very telling and they aged me well.

A book cover from the past: 20+ years later...

very telling and they aged me well

Over 20 years ago I was on the cover of a romance novel - they wanted an older model. Lucky for me (since I liked to work a lot) the way they shot covers in those days is they would hire someone that sort of fits the specifications for the original photograph and then an artist would draw in the correct details.

I was on the cover of this Kismet Romance Book Cover in the early 90's. It was in a photographers studio with a couple of desk chairs and 2 models. I was in my early 20's and I remember it was a very hot humid summer in Chicago and we were dressed in summer clothes. As you can see - they aged us, drew in the windows, first class seats to look like a plane and made our clothes look nicer than they were at the time.

Who would have known - this shoot would be somewhat foreshadowing. Back then I had just started traveling from my house in Chicago to my apartment in New York every other weekend for work. And today I make at least a dozen international trips each year all over the world to shoot documentaries, travel shows and speak at conferences. I'm about to reach a new milestone on American Airlines with 2 million miles flown and Executive Platinum status So this cover may have been more accurate than I originally thought and they aged me well. The author, Lacey Dancer (pen name) and this book ended up being one of a set of 4 and with an adventure of its own: The original publisher folded before it's release so it had difficulty finding a new home, partly because the heroine was over 40, which was rare in the romance novel game then and now. Dancer finally created her own publishing company, Clear Ice Publishing, to release the novel in mass market paperback. To this today "13 Days of Luck" and other romance novels by Lacey Dancer can be found on Amazon and other sites.

I love a happy ending.

LUCKY IN LOVE
Although her fans eagerly awaited her next best-selling novel, author Pippa Weldon was suffering from a nasty case of writer's block. The only cure was a trip; a journey to a new place usually changed her perspective and brought her characters back to life. Before the week's end, Pippa had booked a Caribbean cruise with an unusual theme: the travel agent called it a psychic cruise. Pippa was sure it was just the thing to break the spell of boredom that had taken the edge from her writing.
She found inspiration the minute she encountered fellow passenger Joshua Luck. Not only was he a handsome, forty-eight-year-old millionaire, Joshua was a MAN in capital letters, a forceful, decisive individual. Although Pippa longed to learn some of the more intimate details of Joshua Luck, she wasn't interested in a shipboard romance. Pippa was searching for a passion that would last a lifetime; she had no use for 13 days of Joshua Luck.
Tall, imposing Joshua had come on the cruise to make amends with his estranged brother. After years spent barreling down the narrow path of success, Joshua realized that his glitzy world was wearing thin. He'd never expected to fall for a woman like Pippa, a silver-haired vixen with an impetuous sense of style. In her sky-blue eyes Joshua spied her soul, so clear, so bright, so infinite. She was all wrong for him, definitely not his type. So why did he find her utterly irresistible?
KISMET #59.
