About Fort Worden

Fort Worden State Park Conference Center is located in Port Townsend, WA on the northeastern tip of the Olympic Peninsula, where the Strait of Juan De Fuca meets Puget Sound. Its site was of strategic importance as one of three forts established to guard the entrance of Puget Sound during the early years of the last century. As methods of warfare changed over the years, Fort Worden morphed from a coast artillery post to a training base At the end of the Korean War, the army closed the fort, leaving only a few Naval and Air Force personnel to monitor radar and communications. After lying fallow for several years, the property was acquired by the State of Washington to serve as a correctional center for juvenile offenders. In the 1970’s, the state closed the facility, once again the property was vacant. Civic leaders in Port Townsend spearheaded a successful effort to save the fort for public enjoyment as a state park. Over the past 40 years, Fort Worden has become one of the most visited parks in the Washington State Parks system. As a perfect spot for conferences, vacations and brief getaways, the park offers camping; housing in the Victorians along Officers Row and Non-Commissioned Officers Row, and unique spots like Bliss Vista and Alexander’s Castle; as well as dormitory accommodations in the former Army barracks for large groups.

Fort Worden is home to several organizations offering cultural, artistic and educational experiences: the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, the Puget Sound Coast Artillery Museum, Centrum, Madrona MindBody Institute, the Commanding Officers Quarters Museum, the Port Townsend School of Woodworking and Historic Preservation, Copper Canyon Press, Corvidae Press, the Jefferson County site of Peninsula College, the Port Townsend Goddard College site, and the Fort Worden Conservancy, of which the Fort Worden Oral History Program is a project. Plans are being developed to establish Fort Worden as a Life Long Learning Center.

Wednesday Women of the World: Carol Hasse 25+ years in Sailmaking

While filming Krusing America in Port Townsend - we had the honor of meeting Carol Hasse at Port Townsend Sails: Talented, gracious and kind - an ideal fit for our Wednesday post. 

In fact, the kids of KRUSING AMERICA to this day remember Carol, her sailmaking loft, sanding a wooden boat and taking a boat tour of the Harbor.

CAROL HASSE and PORT TOWNSEND SAILS

CAROL HASSE has been a sailmaker and owner of Hasse & Company Port Townsend Sails, Inc. since 1978. The sails made by Ms. Hasse's loft are world renowned. For two decades, the Seven Seas Cruising Association's membership surveys have acknowledged Port Townsend Sails for building the best offshore cruising sails available anywhere.

Hasse came to sailmaking from a love of cruising. She has logged over 45,000 offshore miles in northern and southern latitudes on wood, fiberglass, ferro-cement, and steel boats ranging in size from 25-100 feel. She has sailed on both mono and multi-hulls and on vessels with traditional and modern rigs. She has been involved personally and professionally in the building of fiberglass and wood boats and has owned a 25-foot wood Nordic Folkboat since 1979.

Hasse is a founding board member of the Wooden Boats Foundation: Its premier event is the annual Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival. Hasse currently serves on the board of the Northwest Maritime Center. She is a regular judge at the Victoria Classic Boat Festival and has served in the past as a judge for Cruising World's Boat of the Year competition at the Annapolis Boat Show.

Hasse regularly lectures for the Wooden Boat Foundation and the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building. She is active in teaching and lecturing on sailmaking, sail repair, sail inventory, and sail handling. Instructional venues include sail training vessels, boat shows, yacht clubs, offshore cruising seminars, Safety at Sea seminars, and Port Townsend Sails' in-loft Hands-On Sail Repair Seminars. 

Ms. Hasse has an ISPA instructor's certificate and her USCG 100-ton near coastal masters auxiliary sail license. She has been active in women's and youth sail training in the Northwest and the South Pacific for over 25 years.

Our mission is to contribute to the self-reliance and confidence of our customers and to the integrity and tradition of the sailmaking craft by providing hands-on education and by building the highest quality cruising sails available anywhere.

Wednesday: THE RHODODENDRON FESTIVAL

THE RHODY FEST in Port Townsend, Washington was featured in the KRUSING AMERICA Washington episode. It later won a Telly Award for Best Travel Episode. The Queen and Court, The Rhody Run and Parade, Tricycle Races, Pet Parades, and Bed Races.  A true community event  since 1935 and each year a week of fun for all ages!!

A HISTORY OF THE RHODODENDRON FESTIVAL

In 1935, Clive Buttermere, a local businessman, convinced the Hearst

Metrotone News organization to come to Jefferson County and film the

rhododendrons in bloom. Hearst provided “short subjects”‘ to theaters throughout the

United States, and visited Jefferson County in that year to photograph the wild

rhododendrons. As a prelude to Hearst’s arrival, Mr. Buttermere and the business

community organized a Queen competition so that there could be a group of young

women photographed with the rhododendrons. Nominations were made and the

community could vote on their favorite by shopping at participating merchants.

Dollars spent equaled votes. Myrtle Olsen was voted the first Rhododendron Queen and

filmed by Hearst.

The American Legion, having witnessed the enthusiasm of the community and

the festival spirit that was created, decided to make the celebration of the beauty of the

rhododendrons in bloom an annual event. In 1936 the first Rhododendron Festival

took Place. Royalty was chosen in the same manner and this process of selection

continued for several years. The first festival in 1936 was a one day event with a

parade. As the years progressed more events were added and the length of the

Festival grew. (Visit the Jefferson County Historical Society to see the old brochures)

The Festival was suspended during World War II (1942-45), and resumed in 1946.

The Chamber of Commerce took over the festival leadership in the early 1950’s

and more events were added until it grew to be a week-long celebration. Each year

brought different events: fat man’s race, boat race, golf tournament, baseball

tournament, air show, cow chip throwing contest, bed race, trike race, beard growing

contest, car show, kids’ parade, Queen’s Ball, and more. For many years, the

candidate who sold the most buttons was chosen Queen. During the early festivals,

the publicity tour only included members of Royalty, rather than candidates.

In the 1980’s the festival became a non-profit corporation and not affiliated with

any one group in the County. Volunteers chair the festival as well as serve as board

members. Royalty are provided scholarships from the association to pursue their

education. Button sales and contributions from community members and

businesses fund the festival. The annual budget is spent on candidates’ expenses,

Royalty expenses, float building and maintenance, travel expenses of the float crew

and Royalty to between 10 and 15 parades per year. The travel to other communities

is not only fun, but is a way of promoting Port Townsend and Jefferson County.
